About OpenAnyDoc
A free, privacy-first file viewer and editor that runs in your browser.
What OpenAnyDoc is
OpenAnyDoc is a free online file viewer and editor. Drop a file on the page to read it, search it, edit it and download a copy, with no sign-up and no software to install.
Who makes it
OpenAnyDoc is built and run by Shahzad Ali, a software developer. It started with a simple observation: people at work keep pasting customer files into online tools that upload them, because opening a CSV or a workbook without the right software is harder than it should be.
Every viewer here is tested against synthetic files before it ships: a 120,000-row CSV, Arabic text saved as Windows-1256, a 100,000-row workbook, JSON files at the 10 MB limit. The privacy rule is not a promise but a test: the build fails if any page makes a network request, sets a cookie or stores anything beyond the theme choice. The source code is public on GitHub.
Why it exists
Opening a file should not mean installing software or uploading a private document to someone else's server. OpenAnyDoc exists so that anyone can open common files quickly in a browser, while the file stays on their own device.
Your files never leave your browser
Most online viewers upload your file to a server. OpenAnyDoc does not: your browser reads the file and draws it on your screen, and your edits stay in the page until you download them. There is nothing for us to store, see or lose.
File types
Today you can open and edit:
- CSV and tab-separated files (.csv, .tsv, .tab)
- Excel workbooks (.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .ods)
- JSON files (.json)
- Plain text files (.txt)
Coming later
Word (.docx), PDF and PowerPoint (.pptx) files are coming. They cannot be opened yet.
Languages
The whole site is available in English and Arabic, and Arabic text inside files is shown right to left.
